Three easy ways to get a copy of your tax transcript
June 13, 2018
Doing your taxes may be challenge, but getting a copy of your tax transcript should not be.
If you have applied for financial aid, the school you plan attend may ask you to provide a tax transcript to verify your income or your parent's income. The school makes this request as a part of the federal (and sometimes state) financial aid verification processes.
There are three ways you can get a transcript:
- Order online. You can use the Get Transcript tool on IRS.gov. You must authenticate you identity with the Secure Access process.
- Order by mail. You can use Get Transcript by Mail or call 800-908-9946 to order a tax return transcripts and/or tax account transcripts.
- Complete and send either Form 4506-T or Form 4506T-EZ to the IRS. You should use Form 4506-T to request other tax records, such as a tax account transcript, record of account, wage and income, and a verification of non-filing.
Transcripts are free and available for the current year and the past three years. Online and phone orders for transcripts can take five to 10 days. A transcript ordered by mail can take up to 30 days.
