Community service may be one of those topics that most of us can agree is a good thing. However, while we may agree on community service, it can be hard to do it sometimes. That's why the Department of Education (ED) waives the community service requirement for some schools participating in the Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program. On March 26, 2018, the office of Federal Student Aid issued an Electronic Announcement, outlining how a school requests a waiver of the community service expenditure requirements under the FWS program for the 2018-19 Award Year. The announcement outlines some of the reasons that a school might request a waiver to the requirement, which may include having a small FWS allocation, being located in a rural area with limited options, or offering a specialized program which limits students' ability to participate in community service. The deadline for submitting a waiver request is April 23, 2018, and ED will notify schools by June 30, 2018 of the determination on their request. | ||||||||||||||||
