Future focus

I was far away from any shore, and the waves were crashing against the fishing boat. Just when I thought the sea was calm, another wave would hit the boat, making it rock violently. My seasickness was made worse by the anxiety over when another wave would hit and whether I would ever see shore again.

A seasoned fisherman on the boat gave me some advice: "Look at the horizon."

It was good advice. Apparently, staring at something far away while at sea, steadies you.

Right now, it seems like our lives are very unsteady. Just when we get some good news about the current crisis, some wave of bad news hits, causing us to reel. The present is uncertain, and it causes us to question the future. Many of us, including students and parents, are going through this right now.

However, focusing on the future may be just what they (and we) need right now. It will allow us to remain steady and persevere through these rough seas.
