Why having more questions than answers can be a good thing - especially when it comes to planning for the future

High school or college students with a lot of questions about what career to pursue or what college to attend may be worried about getting the answers they need.

While it can be overwhelming to have more questions than answers, just having those questions means the student headed in the right direction. The reason is that students who have questions are likely the ones who are thinking about possibilities, gathering information, and seeking answers.

Following are just some of the questions should high school or college students be asking of themselves and others:

  • What is my vision for the future? (This is a big question and sometimes students must answer other questions first to get to this answer.)
  • What do I enjoy doing?
  • What school, volunteer, and work experiences have I had?
  • What school activities have I participated in?
  • What colleges or schools have programs that align with my interests?
  • What type of school do I want to attend? (public, private, or technical/career schools)
  • How much money can I reasonably spend on my education?

Again, this is just a sample of the type of questions you may be asking. Whatever questions you have, look for answers by thinking about what you want to accomplish, talking to parents, educators, or counselors about your options, or conducting online research on college and career websites, including Mapping Your Future.
