Simple steps to update your FSA ID

Your FSA ID is your key to your federal student aid account, and therefore it’s important that you keep information associated with your account up to date.

You’ll create your FSA ID when you complete the FAFSA and essentially what you are doing is creating a federal student aid account at StudentAid.gov.

Whether you are a student or parent, make sure you keep your information secure and update your account when anything changes. Your FSA ID is yours for as long as you need access to manage your or your child’s federal student aid.

You should use a personal email address (not a work or school email address) that you will have access to into the future in case you need to make any changes to your account.

If you already have an FSA ID, here are steps to make any changes to the information in your account:

  1. Log in to your account at StudentAid.gov using your current username and password.
  2. Click on the down arrow, next your name on the upper right of the screen.
  3. Select “Settings.”

To update your username:

  1. Click on “Account Information” on the left menu.
  2. Change your username and click on save changes at the bottom of the screen.

To update your contact information, including your email address:

  1. Click on “Contact Information” on the left menu.
  2. Update your email address and click on save changes at the bottom of the screen.

When you are in your account, it’s a good idea to review all your account settings to make sure everything is updated.

If you are having trouble logging in to your account, you may need to reach out to the Federal Student Aid hotline at 1-800-4-FEDAID.
