Exit Loan Counseling for Graduate Student who borrowed both Federal Stafford and Grad PLUS Loans
This page provides exit loan information for students who have borrowed Federal Stafford Loan(s) and/or a Federal Graduate PLUS Loan and who have or will graduate, discontinue enrollment, or enroll less than half-time. You must complete this session even if you will be enrolling elsewhere or returning to Syracuse University in a future semester.
The online session you are about to complete will help you understand your rights and responsibilities as a Federal Loan borrower. The information that you supply will be sent electronically to your loan guarantor.
Loan Consolidation For more information on the loan consolidation program, please visit our SU Loan Consolidation Information page.
Please Note: If you consolidated your loans while still in school, you waived your 6 month grace period in order to enter repayment early and consolidate your loans. You must therefore begin repayment on that loan right away. However, you should contact your lender for deferment options directly after exiting school (such as the unemployment deferment) to temporarily delay the repayment obligation. If you have additional Stafford loans outside of the Consolidation loan (obtained either before or after the Consolidation loan), you may still be entitled to a grace period on those loans.
Loan Forgiveness You may be eligible to have a portion of your Federal Perkins or Stafford loan cancelled if you are in the teaching, legal, medical, or social work, or child care fields. You may also be eligible if you are a participant in Americorps, Peace Corps, VISTA, or the military.
Repayment and Lender Information Your loan counseling session will contain your actual Federal and Alternative loan indebtedness as reported by your loan guarantor(s) and lender(s). Please note that this information may not include all loans - especially if you borrowed loans through the Direct Loan program. To confirm the accuracy of this data, you may go to www.nslds.ed.gov and obtain your Federal loan information using your Federal PIN, or contact your lenders directly.
If during repayment you develop student loan problems that can't be resolved through normal customer service, you may want to contact the US Department of Education Office of Student Financial Assistance Program's Ombudsman Office. They will work on your behalf to resolve any problems that you experience repaying your loan. The Ombudsman Customer Service Line is 1-877-557-2575. Their website is http://ombudsman.ed.gov/
