Direct PLUS Entrance Counseling

Welcome to UHV's Grad PLUS Entrance Counseling session. All first-time Grad PLUS borrowers at UHV must complete the entrance counseling session prior to their loans being disbursed. The purpose of entrance counseling is to help ensure that you understand your rights, responsibilities, and obligations in regards to the FFEL loan program.


UHV will be notified by e-mail when you have successfully completed the Entrance Loan Counseling requirement. The average loan indebtedness at UHV is approximately $17386.00. An average monthly payment for over ten years is approximately $ 200.08. If you have any quesitons regarding your financial aid status, please feel free to contact the Office of Financial Aid at 361-570-4131 or 1-877-970-4848 ext. 131. Our office hours are 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 pm. Monday - Thursday and 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Friday.

Additional Information

1. You must be a Graduate student enrolled at least half-time to receive your loan funds.  In addition, UHV will award you the maximum Subsidized and Unsubsidized loan awards possible, prior to awarding the Grad PLUS Loan.

2. If you drop below half-time, any remaining disbursements may be canceled. If you totally withdraw, you may have to return a portion of your loan funds to the lender.

3. Typically, the loan period is for the Fall and Spring semesters. One-half of the funds is disbursed as early as 10 days prior to the 1st class day and the second disbursement is released at the mid-point of the loan period.

4. Exit Counseling - All loan recipients are required to complete Exit Loan Counseling before or soon after graduating, dropping below half-time, or withdrawing from UHV.

Instructions

Before You Start

  • Ensure you meet the browser and system requirements:
    • You must use at least Internet Explorer 6.0 or Mozilla Firefox 1.0. Get a browser now.
    • You can use any Internet service provider (ISP) to connect to the Internet; however, you should access this counseling session using one of the browsers above after you've connected. Do NOT use the ISP's browser, such as AOL or MSN--you won't be able to complete the student form at the end of the session!
    • You must enable JavaScript in your browser.

  • You will need about 25 minutes to complete this counseling session.

  • You will need the following information:
    • Your Social Security number
    • Your driver's license number

  • You might need the following information:
    • Names, addresses, telephone numbers, and employers for your next of kin and/or parent
    • Name, address, telephone number, and employer for your spouse, if applicable
    • Names, addresses, telephone numbers, and employers for two references residing at different addresses
    • NOTE: Providing names and information for your spouse, parent, next of kin, and references does not obligate them to assist with repayment of your loan. Regulations require you provide this data so your loan holder can locate you, if, in the future, they have an invalid address or phone number.

What to Do

  • Read the content and answer the questions.
  • Fill out the student information form. Use the comment box for any comments or questions you have for your school.
  • Print the confirmation page that appears after you fill out the student information form or note your confirmation number for your records.

NOTE: Generally, the Back and Forward buttons on your browser will not work once you begin the counseling session.  Use the buttons within the counseling to navigate.
