Stafford Entrance Counseling

Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO

Welcome!

All new incoming students, first-time Stafford Loan borrowers or transfer students who will be attending Lincoln University are required to complete loan counseling in order to receive a Stafford Loan through the Federal Family Education Loan Program.  You will get a confirmation number at the end. Please keep this information for your records. The financial aid staff will receive your confirmation electronically the next business day after you complete counseling.

If you have questions about your rights and responsibilities of borrowing a student loan, please use the information below to contact the Department of Student Financial Aid, visit the NSLDS website (www.nslds.ed.gov), or contact the lending institution/guaranty agency for your loans.

As part of our efforts in ‘going green’, we have created a linked process that will route you through what is required to complete as a first-time borrower.  Those items required are 1) Stafford Entrance Loan Counseling, 2) Lender Selection, 3) Lincoln University Student Loan Request Form, and 4) electronically signing a MPN for your Stafford loan.  All parts must be completed before your loan funds will be disbursed to us.

Also, make sure you click ‘EXIT’ at the end of the counseling session to go to the next step in the online process.

You can view our preferred lender list at http://www.lincolnu.edu/pages/1981.asp.

All loan funds will be disbursed to Lincoln thirty (30) days after the start of your first semester, provided that all paperwork is complete. You may view our Anticipated Disbursement Schedule for 2009-2010 by clicking here.  If the amount of financial aid assistance exceeds the amount of your Student Accounts bill, you may be eligible for a refund.  Generally account refunds are available within 14 days of receipt of the funds.  For more information about account refunds, please contact the Student Accounts Receivable Office in 105R Young Hall or at (573) 681-5278.  Please keep in mind that your financial aid award may be adjusted if you receive additional assistance from any other source or if you provide new or conflicting eligibility information.

Interest accrues on an unsubsidized Stafford loan or PLUS loan and is capitalized during periods when the interest is not paid by either you or the federal government. If you allow it to be capitalized, you will be charged interest on top of interest when your loans enter repayment. It is your option to pay interest while you are in school on an unsubsidized Stafford loan.

The definition of half-time enrollment is six credits hours for all semesters at Lincoln as an undergraduate student.  As a graduate student, half-time enrollment is considered five credit hours for all semesters at Lincoln. If you do not maintain at least half-time enrollment, you will not be eligible for student loans. Also if you have already borrowed student loans, your grace period will begin on the date you drop below half-time enrollment, withdraw, or graduate.

If you feel that you need to withdraw from Lincoln, please contact the Records Office, in the B-4 Young Hall, to obtain the official withdrawal form. You will also need to stop by the Default Prevention Office to receive important information about your student loan(s).

Stafford Entrance Counseling Session Instructions

Before You Start

  • Ensure you meet the browser and system requirements:
    • You must use at least Internet Explorer 6.0 or Mozilla Firefox 1.0. Get a browser now.
    • You can use any Internet service provider (ISP) to connect to the Internet; however, you should access this counseling session using one of the browsers above after you've connected. Do NOT use the ISP's browser, such as AOL or MSN--you won't be able to complete the student form at the end of the session!
    • You must enable JavaScript in your browser.

  • PARENTS: Please don't complete the counseling session on behalf of your son or daughter, as this federal requirement helps the student understand the rights and responsibilities of borrowing a student loan.

  • You will need about 25 minutes to complete this counseling session.

  • You will need the following information:
    • Your Social Security number
    • Your driver's license number

  • You might need the following information:
    • Name, address, telephone number, and employer for your spouse, if applicable
    • Names, addresses, telephone numbers, and employers for your next of kin and/or parent
    • Names, addresses, telephone numbers, and employers for two references residing at different addresses
    • NOTE: Providing names and information for your spouse, parent, next of kin, and references does not obligate them to assist with repayment of your loan. Regulations require you provide this data so your loan holder can locate you, if, in the future, they have an invalid address or phone number.

  • The student loan calculator in this session will help you calculate your estimated monthly payment. If you aren't sure how much you'll borrow, you can ask your school for the average student loan indebtedness of borrowers at the school or in your program of study at the school.

What to Do

  • Read the content and answer the questions.
  • Fill out the student information form. Use the comment box for any comments or questions you have for your school.
  • Print the confirmation page that appears after you fill out the student information form or note your confirmation number for your records.
