Direct Loan Entrance Counseling

Kankakee Community College in Kankakee, IL

Kankakee Community College (KCC) is pleased to offer Federal Stafford Student Loans and Federal Stafford Parent PLUS Loans.

Complete Your Stafford Student Loan Form/Parent PLUS Loan Form

All new incoming students, first-time KCC Stafford Loan borrowers and/or transfer students who will be attending KCC are required to complete a Stafford Student Loan Form or Parent PLUS Loan Form with KCC prior to completing Mapping Your Future loan counseling.  Please go to www.kcc.edu choose quick link 'Financial Aid' and select 'Apply for Stafford/PLUS Loans.'  Our loan policy and other financial aid information is there for students to access.  Students will need to print the appropriate form, complete and sign the form and return it to the Office of Financial Aid.  Once the student turns in the applicable loan form, the Office of Financial Aid will process your request. If there is additional information needed, we will send a letter requesting that information. Otherwise, the student will receive a Loan Award Letter stating their financial aid awards and estimated loan eligibility.

WHAT YOU MUST DO TO ACTIVATE YOUR STAFFORD/PLUS LOAN

Students follow the instructions on their unique KCC Loan Award Letter.  If a student has not received a Loan Award Letter the student has not completed the Loan Form process above.

The Department of Education requires all students to complete loan entrance counseling. We require the loan counseling be done the first time a student applies for a Stafford loan at KCC. Federal regulations for student loans change each year. If it has been more than three (3) years since loan counseling was completed, KCC requires the student to complete the loan counseling again. KCC will determine if the student needs to complete loan counseling and communicate that status on the Student's Loan Award Letter.

You will receive a Loan Award Letter that will tell you to "Complete Mapping Your Future loan entrance counseling" or "Complete a Master Promissory Note with EDFund."

The Higher Education Opportunity Act, which was signed into law August 14, 2008, requires that, in addition to the information provided to you during the entrance counseling, you also understand the following terms and conditions of your student loans:

  • I understand that my financial aid award may be adjusted if I receive additional assistance from any other source or if I provide new or conflicting eligibility information.
  • Interest accrues on an unsubsidized Stafford loan or PLUS loan and is capitalized during periods when the interest is not paid by either you or the federal government. If I allow it to be capitalized, I will be charged interest on top of interest when my loans enter repayment.  It is my option to pay interest while I am in school on an unsubsidized Stafford loan.
  • I understand that half-time enrollment at Kankakee Community College is six credits for the fall/spring terms and three credits for the summer term.  If my enrollment status drops to less than half time (6 cr/3cr), I no longer qualify for in-school deferment of my loan payments, and I either begin my grace period or my loans enter repayment.  During my grace period, I am not required to make payments, although unsubsidized interest will continue to accrue.
  • I've been advised of the importance of contacting the Offices of:  Financial Aid, Admissions & Registration and accounting at KCC if I withdraw prior to completing my program of study so that the institution can provide exit counseling, including information regarding the borrower's repayment options and possible loan consolidation.
  • If I have any questions about my borrowers rights and responsibilities or the terms and conditions of the loan, I can contact the Office of Financial Aid, visit the NSLDS website (www.nslds.ed.gov), or contact the lending institution/guaranty agency for my loans.

By completing the online counseling, I acknowledge that I have received student loan entrance counseling and have read and understand all the information provided above.

    • You can use any Internet service provider (ISP) to connect to the Internet; however, you should access this counseling session using one of the browsers above after you've connected. Do NOT use the ISP's browser, such as AOL or MSN--you won't be able to complete the student form at the end of the session!
    • You must enable JavaScript in your browser.

  • PARENTS: Please don't complete the counseling session on behalf of your son or daughter, as this federal requirement helps the student understand the rights and responsibilities of borrowing a student loan.

  • You will need about 25 minutes to complete this counseling session.

  • You will need the following information:
    • Your Social Security number
    • Your driver's license number

  • You might need the following information:
    • Name, address, telephone number, and employer for your spouse, if applicable
    • Names, addresses, telephone numbers, and employers for your next of kin and/or parent
    • Names, addresses, telephone numbers, and employers for two references residing at different addresses
    • NOTE: Providing names and information for your spouse, parent, next of kin, and references does not obligate them to assist with repayment of your loan. Regulations require you provide this data so your loan holder can locate you, if, in the future, they have an invalid address or phone number.

  • The student loan calculator in this session will help you calculate your estimated monthly payment. If you aren't sure how much you'll borrow, you can ask your school for the average student loan indebtedness of borrowers at the school or in your program of study at the school.
