It is always helpful to have another resource in your corner, especially when it involves protecting student data. To help you have the appropriate resources, the U.S. Department of Education created the Privacy Technical Assistance website http://ptac.ed.gov/.

The published purpose of the website is to be a "one-stop" resource for education stakeholders to learn about data privacy, confidentiality, and security practices related to student-level longitudinal data systems and other uses of student data.

Part of the website is the PTAC toolkit which includes such topics as best security practices, with applicable tabs providing more information about topics like protecting student privacy and best practices for data destruction.
