Communicating with your future students

Videos, photos, and brief, short-lived posts - online and all on mobile - that is how you should be or will be reaching all of your incoming students.
According to "Teens, Social Media & Technology 2018" released today by the Pew Research Center, YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat are the most popular online platforms among teens. The research report also found that 95 percent of teens, ages 13-17, have access to a smartphone, and 45 percent say they are online "almost constantly."
Facebook may not be the place to post messages if you are trying to reach a majority of incoming students. It's no longer the dominant social media platform with only about 51 percent of teens reporting use of Facebook with usage at much higher levels on other social media platforms.
A couple of caveats from the study - while smartphones are common among teens, the availability of a home computer varies by income. In addition, the type of social media platform varies somewhat by income as well. So before you take down your Facebook page, remember that it may still be an important communication tool to reach some of your future students.
