It is probably one of the most important skills needed for college.
To get ready for college, you will need to complete several important tasks, like applying to college, completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and deciding what career you want to pursue. Certainly, making those decisions and completing those tasks shows you are a skilled individual who is ready to pursue higher education.
However, most students have family members, friends, and counselors nearby to help them through those tasks. If you have a problem, you have someone to ask for help.
Things change when you go off to higher education. Your ability to cope with any situation will be critical.
Coping skills will help you deal with any situation that comes your way. For many students, college is the first time they have lived away from family and friends. It is important to realize now that your parents or guardian will not be able to help when, for example, you lock yourself out of your dorm room.
If you have coping skills you realize that most problems are not catastrophes, and, typically, there is a solution. Having coping skills does not mean you never ask for help. It means that you know there is a solution for most problems, and you will not quit school the first time anything bad happens.
Coping skills come naturally to come people. They seem to be better at handling any situation that comes their way. Even if coping skills do not come naturally for you, you can get better at coping by dealing with as much as you can on your own. Take the initiative to solve a problem on your own or at least contact the people who can help you - rather than having a parent or guardian handle it.
By handing problems on your own now, not only will you enhance your coping skills, you can be confident that you have one of the most important skills needed to succeed in higher education.
