Financial capability

It is all about the money.

Often said as a negative response, that statement is, in fact, reality. Money and our finances affect so much of our lives - both limiting options and creating possibilities.

That is why the Department of Education hosted a special meeting on Monday, May 13, in honor of National Financial Capability month entitled, "Rethinking Financial Literacy Education: Foundations for Lifelong Financial Capability." Mapping Your Future, along with several other organizations in the education industry, attended the event. If you were not able to attend, you can view the recording of the event online.

Those of us in the financial aid industry well know the importance of financial education. Students who are better educated about their finances make better financial decisions while in school and are less likely to graduate with crushing student loan debt.

However, with so many competing priorities, how do we place financial education at the top? The answer is difficult and will be different for every institution, but we must do it if we are to provide all of our students with the skills necessary for life-long success - especially those skills that are all about the money.
