New rates for HEAL borrowers

Although students have not received Health Education Assistance Loans (HEAL) for quite some time, there are still borrowers (maybe some of your alumni) who are repaying the loans.

In an April 15 Electronic Announcement, the Department of Education provided information on new HEAL Program interest rates. According to the Department, the maximum HEAL Program interest rates for the quarter ending June 30, 2019 are now available in the "Current Maximum Interest Rates" section of the HEAL Interest Rates page of the HEAL Information area on the IFAP website. The Department has also made conforming updates to the "Maximum Interest Rates for Previous Three Quarters" section of the same page.

From fiscal year 1978 through fiscal year 1998, the Health Education Assistance Loan (HEAL) Program insured loans made by participating lenders to eligible graduate students in schools of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, veterinary medicine, optometry, podiatry, public health, pharmacy, chiropractic, or in programs in health administration and clinical psychology. It is no longer possible to obtain a new HEAL Program loan. The making of new HEAL Program loans was discontinued on September 30, 1998.

If you are a HEAL Program lender or lender servicer and have questions about the maximum HEAL Program interest rates, contact the HEAL Program Team at 1-844-509-8957 or HEAL@ed.gov.
