Department of Education to reconsider some TEACH Grants becoming loans

Some teachers who have had their TEACH Grants turned into student loans may be eligible to have that student loan reconverted into a grant.

The Department of Education recently announced the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Reconsideration Process.

TEACH Grant reconsideration is a process through which certain TEACH Grant recipients whose TEACH Grants were converted to Direct Unsubsidized Loans can request reconsideration of those conversions. Recipients are eligible to request reconsideration if they met or are meeting the TEACH Grant service requirements within the eight-year service obligation period, but had their grants converted to loans because they did not comply with the annual certification requirement.

The Department sent emails last week individuals who are eligible to request TEACH Grant reconsideration. Individuals who received that email may qualify to have their eligible Direct Unsubsidized Loans converted back to TEACH Grants. In addition to the email, borrowers can apply for reconsideration if they meet the requirements as explained at StudentAid.gov/teach-reconsideration.

Complete information about TEACH Grants is available on the TEACH Grant information page.
