Sharing scholarship tips

Surveys can be very insightful for the information collected but can also be a drag for people filling them out.

That's why we're extremely grateful to all of the financial aid professionals who shared their expertise in our recent survey about scholarships.

We discussed the findings in our "Strategies for making the most scholarship applications" webinars conducted over the past few weeks. The recording is now online for viewing.

In summary, the survey revealed the importance of understanding what applications need to be completed, and the results are a good reminder that many institutions require a completed FAFSA before they will consider a student for their institutional scholarships.

Some of the best responses from the survey came when we asked for favorite advice, such as:

Getting ready

  • Stay organized and write down all of the scholarships with due dates
  • Parents can help do the research and getting the students organized
  • Look for scholarships with items you use in your home
  • Never pay a fee for a scholarship search

Applying

  • Apply early. Read rules.
  • Earlier is better than later. Always be organized and know your individual college deadlines since they are the earliest of scholarship and grant deadlines.
  • Keep an open mind and apply for all of the scholarships you are eligible for.
  • Keep a record of your applications and respond to any inquiries you receive.
  • Apply for two scholarships a week, treating it like a part-time job.

Money management

  • Do two budgets as if you are getting your first job out of college - one to include student loans and another without student loans. See the difference it can make!
