Regulatory relief

Tuesday was a good news day for students pursuing higher education.

It was also a good news day for higher education professionals and their institutions. The temporary regulatory relief announced by the Department of Education on Tuesday is aimed at helping students by removing some of the verification requirements. The Department said the remaining verification requirements focus primarily on identify theft and fraud for the remainder of the 2021-22 verification cycle.

But the change is one that will likely have an impact beyond those students who would have otherwise been challenged with providing additional documentation. For example, verification has been a regulatory burden for many higher education institutions. Verification may have also contributed to the decline in enrollment when some students, challenged by providing the required paperwork, gave up on their pursuit of higher education.

Declining enrollment is probably one of the biggest problems facing higher education today, and, while this regulatory relief may not solve the issue, it certainly comes as good news.
