The Department of Education has proposed changes to several regulations impacting student loans and affordability issues and is seeking public comment on these proposed changes.

In a July 13 Federal Register notice, the Department issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM), proposing to amend regulations governing seven topics related to student loans, including:

  • Borrower Defense to Repayment
  • Public Service Loan Forgiveness
  • Interest Capitalization
  • Closed School Loan Discharges
  • Total and Permanent Disability Loan Discharges
  • False Certification Discharges
  • Predispute Arbitration

According to the Department, the proposed changes are intended to bring greater transparency and clarity and improve the administration of federal student financial aid programs to assist and protect students, participating institutions, and taxpayers.

The public must submit comments on these regulations no later than 30 days following this notice in the Federal Register.
