The one financial aid deadline students need to remember

While it is really never too late to apply for financial aid, there is an important deadline for students to remember.

That deadline is the financial aid priority deadline, which is determined by a school, college, or university. The priority deadline won’t impact a student’s eligibility for federal financial aid, but it is an important deadline to meet if the student wants to be considered for the financial aid and scholarship programs offered by the institution.

If possible, students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as it becomes available way ahead of the priority deadline. (The FAFSA was made available on October 1, 2021, for the 2022-23 academic year.) By applying as soon as possible and certainly before the priority deadline, the student ensures that they will be considered for the institutional aid, which sometimes is a limited amount and awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis.

However, if a student misses a priority deadline, the FAFSA should still be completed. The student will still be eligible for federal financial aid and possibly other financial aid programs.
