An artistic choice

Some decisions just can't be reversed.

Like the decision by the artist, Damien Hirst, to burn thousands of his artworks (worth what some say was millions of dollars) this week.

According to Hirst, he had no choice but to burn the artworks. That's because when he sold the paintings as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) - basically digital assets - the buyer was given a choice to either keep the NFT or exchange it for the real painting. Based on this video of Hirst burning the paintings, it seems many buyers chose to keep the NFT.

The decision for Hirst to burn his artwork, it seems, was made by the buyers. But, in the video, he does talk about the challenge of making decisions. As Hirst points out, you could add something to an artwork and ruin it or not add something and regret it.

Of course, one could argue that the initial decision to burn the artwork was made by Hirst when he sold the artwork as NFTs and agreed to burn those paintings.

Sometimes we do have power over a situation.

The key is recognizing that power before it's too late.
