Summer on my mind |
||||||||||||||||
When I thought about summer, this was not what I had in mind. As a teenager, I wanted to go places like the lake and do fun things, but the orchard was full of apples and my mom had other plans. So, there I was sitting in the house with my brother and two sisters, peeling apples until my hands were sore and sticky. When I closed my eyes, all I could see were apples. It was monotonous work so we invented some games – like who could have the longest apple peel. We’d play the radio and see who could be the first to guess the name of a song. Then, we’d sing along to the radio (I vaguely remember singing “Cruel, Cruel, Summer” by Bananarama). When things got a little too boisterous, my mom would come in from the hot kitchen (where she was making applesauce), wiping her brow, and asking us how many apples we had peeled. As a financial aid professional, you know what it’s like to work when it seems like everyone else has the summer off. Instead of apples, it’s probably verification forms or financial aid calculations that you see when you close your eyes at night. It’s no vacation at the beach, but there are good times at work, fun with your colleagues, and the feeling of accomplishment when you help a student. Perhaps, you’ll create some summer memories you’ll have for the rest of your life. Looking back, I am sure I grumbled about working over the summer. But now – now when I think of summer, those precious and sweet memories of peeling apples are just what I have in mind. – By Catherine Mueller | ||||||||||||||||
