In the future, anyone who provides information on a student's application for federal financial aid will be known as a contributor.

Beginning with the 2024-25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be released in December 2023, the U.S. Department of Education is moving to a “roles-based” form.

The Department will use the term “contributor” to describe any individual required to provide signature and consent on the FAFSA form, including the student; the student’s spouse; a biological or adoptive parent; or the parent’s spouse (stepparent).

According to the Department, contributors must provide the required information and sign their respective section for a FAFSA form to be considered complete.
