Being neighborly

"What if they live in our neighborhood?"

My college-aged daughter asked that question after a close call in traffic. Another driver had made an illegal U-turn and nearly hit my car.

I guess the driver and a passenger in the other vehicle saw the look of shock on my face and decided to wave to me. Well. . . actually. . . it was more like an obscene gesture than a wave.

Luckily, my indignation was only brief – thanks to my daughter who was in the car with me. In the moments after, we discussed the situation and decided it was best to just ignore it. Besides, imagine if they had just waved at me, I would have forgotten the whole incident.

I thought, yes, no matter what they did, everyone is our neighbor, and we should do everything to keep peace – especially during this time when everyone is under stress and may be upset about something. I need to better understand what they might be going through right now.

As I neared the entrance to my neighborhood, the car that made the U-turn was ahead of us. They turned into our neighborhood, and I realized they lived one street over from me.

It was a good reminder that I really should treat everyone like my neighbor – because they just might be.
