In times of darkness

In ancient times, it was a bad omen.

An eclipse was often seen as it’s time to pack up and leave, according to Tyler Nordgren, an astronomer, author and artist, quoted in this Smithsonian article about how ancient civilizations reacted to eclipses.

It’s not unlike how many financial aid professionals are feeling today, having our world eclipsed by a whole new FAFSA. It’s been scary sometimes and packing up and leaving may be tempting.

Today, however, an eclipse is seen as a rare event. Those of us in the path of totality feel kind of special to be able to experience the event firsthand. In fact, cities in the path of totality are expecting lots of visitors wanting to be a part of the unique event. We didn’t choose to be in the path of totality, it chose us.

And while we can’t see this new FAFSA as something exciting – maybe we will in the future and you are here in this path of FAFSA totality. You didn’t choose this new FAFSA, but it takes someone pretty special to handle it all. And maybe that’s why you are where you are today.

Consider that a good omen.
