In an April 3 Electronic Announcement, the Department said it recognizes that the end of the public health emergency (PHE) will impact both institutions and students.

In the announcement, the Department said flexibilities related to student eligibility for federal benefit programs including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid, including the temporary student exemptions that expanded SNAP eligibility for some students, will end 30 days after PHE ends on May 11.

The Department’s Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education has published a memorandum that provides additional information about this upcoming change and actions that institutions of higher education and state higher education agencies can take during this transition. The Department said it encourages partners to review this information “to ensure that staff and students have the information that they need during this transition period.”

Anyone with questions about the memorandum should contact studentbasicneeds@ed.gov.
