Webinar to discuss providing Pell for incarcerated students
May 19, 2022
Financial aid professionals will soon be able to learn more about one of the major upcoming changes included in the FAFSA Simplification Act.
In a May 10 Dear Colleague Letter, the Department of Education announced it would conduct a webinar to discuss the new statutory provisions that will restore Pell Grant eligibility for incarcerated students.
Beginning July 1, 2023, all incarcerated students who are enrolled in eligible prison education programs will be eligible for Pell Grants. According to the Department, these changes "have the potential to increase access to postsecondary education in prisons and give many of our nation's incarcerated persons a second chance."
In addition to discussing the new statutory provisions that will restore Pell Grant eligibility for incarcerated students, the Department will share what it has learned about offering Title IV funds to students in a prison setting through the Second Chance Pell experiment.
The webinar is scheduled for Thursday, May 26 from 1-2:30 p.m. Eastern time (ET). Registration is not required but the number of attendees is limited. Log into the FSA Training Center to learn more about the event and to add it to your calendar.
