Mapping Your Future offers printable guide for parents considering PLUS loans

There are proposals under consideration now for Parent PLUS loan counseling, but, as of yet, there are no requirements for parents to receive counseling before obtaining a Direct PLUS loan for their child.

Although there has been no requirement, Mapping Your Future has been offering information on Parent PLUS Loans on its site for years, including a printable PLUS Loan Guide for Parents. This guide has been recently updated and can be printed for easy distribution to parents.

Parent PLUS loans have received a lot of attention lately with concerns that while a credit check is required prior to borrowing, there is no determination of a parent’s ability to repay the loan. On the other hand, some are concerned that making PLUS loans more restrictive could negatively impact college access for those who need the most assistance.

Recently, the Department of Education announced proposed rules to strengthen the Parent PLUS program. Those proposed rules include some counseling as does legislation proposed in Congress.
