Despite the federal government shutdown, the Department of Education will resume negotiated rulemaking sessions on the student loan provisions which became law under budget reconciliation.
Negotiators are expected to continue their discussions on the provisions November 3 to November 7.
The first negotiated rulemaking session was conducted in early October and while many of the provisions were a part of the discussions, most of the focus was on the definition of a professional student. Under the budget reconciliation law, graduate students will be able to borrow up to $20,500 ($100,000 lifetime) and students in professional programs (such as law or medicine) can borrow up to $50,000 per year ($200,000 lifetime) in Direct Unsubsidized Loans.
The rulemaking sessions continue despite the shutdown because the Department of Education planned to meet statutory deadlines.
