Updated 2026-27 Federal School Code List now available

By Marlene Seeklander

The Department of Education recently released an updated 2026-27 Federal School Code List, which plays a key role in the FAFSA.

The Department announced the availability of the updated 2026–27 Federal School Code (FSC) List of Participating Schools.  Although it’s usually not necessary, students can enter these codes on the FAFSA in order for the postsecondary schools to receive their FAFSA information. In most cases, students will enter the name of the school and select it from a drop-down list. The school’s code will be a part of their listing.

However, if the student isn’t sure of the school’s name or location (or there are multiple schools with similar names and locations), they should verify that they have selected the school with the right code.

The updated list, posted on a quarterly basis, is available in PDF format and as a Microsoft Excel file, which offers a searchable format.

Schools are reminded that their name and address must be kept current. Updates to school name or address need to be made through the Electronic Application for Approval to Participate in the Federal Student Financial Aid Programs (E-App) (https://fsapartners.ed.gov/title-iv-program-eligibility/title-iv-participation-application) as this information is used to update the Federal School Code List of Participating Schools.

Schools can also customize how their school’s name appears on the list and how it will be displayed on the FAFSA. To customize their name, schools need to:

  • Select the “Update/Report Information–Federal School Code” purpose on the E-App
  • Go to the “Location” Section
  • Update the Federal School Code name field

Changes to a school address can only be made by contacting the School Participation Section for assistance. Schools can also request that a Federal School Code be created for an approved additional location as outlined in the announcement.
