A few tips for creating an FSA ID

By Catherine Mueller

Creating a StudentAid.gov account isn’t difficult but sometimes a few tips will make the process easier.

Setting up an account at StudentAid.gov, is also known as creating an FSA ID, which is the username and password for the account. Students and generally at least one parent will need to create one in order to complete the FAFSA.

When setting up an account, here are a few tips to make the process successful:

  • Make sure your name and social security number match what you have on your Social Security card. The Department of Education will verify your information with the Social Security Administration.
  • A student and parent (or parents) cannot share an account and cannot use the same email address and/or phone number to create their accounts.
  • Don’t use a school or work email account. Make sure to use a personal email address that you will have access to in the future. Having access to the email account will be important if you ever need to reset your password in the future.

Be sure to keep your username and password secure to protect your personal information.
