Taking the ACT is a big deal for many students, but you can reduce some of the stress on test day.
To do your best on ACT test day, you may want to follow these tips:
- Organize your bag the day before with the items you’ll need – Being organized in advance will prevent rushing around the next morning to gather items. That just leads to stress. Don’t forget to pack your ACT admission ticket, valid Photo ID, two No. 2 pencils, an eraser, an approved calculator, and snacks for the break.
- Get a good night’s sleep – Make sure to get plenty of sleep the night before so you’re well rested on test day. This will help you do your best on the ACT.
- Set an extra alarm – Make sure to set a back-up alarm or have a family member wake you up so you’re not rushing around to get ready on time.
- Eat a nutritious breakfast – Eat foods that will provide energy (such as oatmeal, eggs, Greek yogurt, or a smoothie), so you feel mentally alert during the test. After all, you don’t want a growling stomach to distract fellow test takers.
- Dress comfortably and in layers – Temperatures in test rooms can vary, so dress in layers so you are comfortable during the test. Being too cold or too warm can impact your concentration.
- Know the location and arrive early – If the test location is in an area you’re not familiar with, check it out in advance and know how long it will take to get there or if there are any detours. You’ll need to arrive by 8 a.m. – arriving 15 minutes early won’t hurt.
- Leave your cell phone or other electronic devices behind – Accessing electronic devices, including a cell phone, is prohibited, even during break. Leave those items at home or locked in your vehicle.

Most importantly – relax and good luck!
