Department of Education seeks comments and recommendations for the collection of FAFSA information

By Marlene Seeklander

Anyone who has ideas on how the Department of Education could minimize the administrative burden of the 2026-27 FAFSA on applicants, has an opportunity now to submit their recommendations.

In compliance with the Paperwork Reduction Act, the Department of Education is soliciting written comments and recommendations for the collection of FAFSA information. A Federal Register Notice posted on May 14 requests public comment on the 2026-2027 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form and related application materials.

In the Notice, the Department said it is especially interested in public comment addressing the following issues:

  1. Is this collection necessary to the proper functions of the Department?
  2. Will this information be processed and used in a timely manner?
  3. Is the estimate of burden accurate?
  4. How might the Department enhance the quality, utility, and clarity of the information to be collected?
  5. How might the Department minimize the burden of this collection on the respondents, including through the use of information technology?

Comments must be submitted on or before June 13, 2025, and will be considered public records.
