In case you haven’t realized it, the holidays are just around the corner.
The holidays often mean gift giving, but it doesn’t mean that as a student you have to go into debt coming up with gift ideas for friends and family.
A few ideas for things you can make:
- Hand crafted gifts – for both the young and old in your life. If your school has a “maker space” consider making personalized bookmarks for the book lovers in your life, ornaments, animal figures for children (if you have access to a 3-D printer), and other hand-crafted items.
- Edible gifts. Snack mix, cookies, and jelly or jam are just a few things you can make. Put it in a festive container, add a bow and gift tag, and the gift is ready.
- Home cooked meal. Offer to set a date for a simple meal for family or friends, prepared by you. Not only will they enjoy not having to cook, but the time spent together will be priceless.
- Coupon book. Create a coupon book with coupons for a home cooked meal, babysitting, doing household chores, or helping a younger sibling with homework – just to name a few.
Gifts don’t have to be material items. Consider organizing a group of friends or family to attend a concert, movie, a walk through a local museum, roller skating or ice skating, or a game night. Some people enjoy “experiences” rather than material things.
Whatever you choose to do for gift giving, remember, you can usually make something inexpensive that will be welcomed by the receiver.
