Federal Loan Servicing Center closures due to hazardous weather conditions

By Marlene Seeklander

Severe weather and resulting closures are unpredictable, but the Department of Education does have contingency plans.

In a recent Electronic Announcement, the Department provided some information on temporary closures of their Federal Loan Servicing Centers due to hazardous weather conditions.

The Federal Loan Servicing Centers will implement contingency plans and remain open as much as possible during hazardous weather, although weather conditions may require the servicer to close early or for an entire day.

Borrowers and school customers will be informed of a temporary closure through a recorded message on its Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system, as well as posting a message on its website. Services normally available to borrowers and schools through the servicer’s website and IVR will remain available.

An Electronic Announcement will be published if there is hazardous weather that is widespread and has a significant impact to borrowers and schools served by one or more federal loan servicing centers.

Following the temporary closure of a service center, questions can be directed to the applicable servicer. The Loan Servicing Centers for Schools Contact Information page includes contact information for the servicers.
