Although every school or college has its own unique identity, sometimes its name can be similar to another institution.
For that reason, in addition to the names, there is also a not-so-secret code for schools, and it’s a good idea to know how to find out these school codes before you apply for financial aid.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) asks you to list the colleges where you plan to apply for admission and gives you the option to search by name or by the code. The institutions you list will receive your FAFSA information and will use it to determine your eligibility for financial aid.
There is an easy search function within the FAFSA to help you get the code, but if your school has multiple locations, you’ll want to make sure you choose the location you plan to attend. Most schools include their code on the financial aid page of their website.
The Department of Education also has a convenient tool online to help you determine the code of the institutions you want to list on the FAFSA or if you need the code for other reasons.
