Paying for college with scholarships

Students who apply for scholarships know it’s the smart way to pay for a college education.

Scholarships are sometimes referred to as “free money” since it usually doesn’t have to be repaid. Scholarships are also a recognition of a student’s accomplishments – recognition that can sometimes lead to other opportunities or be included on a resume.

A few scholarships students may want to consider seeking, include:

Equitable Excellence Scholarship– Equitable will award 100 $5,000 annual scholarships that are renewable for up to four years for a total of $20,000 per recipient. High school seniors with financial need who plan to enroll full-time at a two-year or four-year college or university can apply. Deadline: December 18

The Dream, US Opportunity Scholarship – This scholarship offers funding to first-generation immigrant students who are currently undocumented with or without DACA or TPS and who came to the U.S. before November 1, 2020. The US Opportunity Scholarship is designed to help cover tuition fees and on-campus housing and meals for a bachelor’s degree. Deadline: January 31

The Dream, US National Scholarship – The US National Scholarship is open to first generation immigrant students with or without DACA or TPS who came to the U.S. before the age of 16 and before November 1, 2020. It helps cover tuition and fees at one of the Partner Colleges with a $33,000 maximum for a bachelor’s degree. An additional stipend of up to $6,000 is given for books, supplies, and transportation. Deadline: February 28

Oregon Promise Grant – The Oregon Promise is a state grant that helps cover tuition costs for recent high school graduates and GED test graduates attending an Oregon community college. Open to residents of Oregon who graduate from an Oregon high school between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026, applicants must apply during their senior year or immediately after GED test completion. Deadline: Rolling deadlines based on graduation date
