For those individuals who like to bring about change, particularly as it relates to distracted driving, the Project Yellow Light Scholarship may be an opportunity to consider.
The Project Yellow Light/Hunter Garner Scholarship is a scholarship competition founded by the family of Hunter Garner, who was killed in a car crash in 2007 at the age of 16. The mission of the scholarship is to bring about change and applicants have one clear mission – to encourage their peers to develop and embrace safe driving habits and not drive distracted.
The scholarship has three competitions for both high school and college categories:
- Video – Winner will receive an $8,000 scholarship and videos are due April 1.
- Radio – Winner will receive a $2,000 scholarship and recordings are due April 1.
- Billboard – Winner will receive a $2,000 scholarship and billboard designs closed on March 1.
Applicants need to be high school juniors and seniors between the ages of 14 and 20 who will complete graduation requirements by or before July 31, 2026, or 2027, and undergraduate college students between the ages of 15 and 25. The scholarship awards can be used at the college, university, junior college or trade school, or technical college the recipient plans to attend.
A unique feature of the scholarship is that a team of no more than four people per team can also apply. If a team wins, the scholarship will be evenly distributed among the members.
