Students and borrowers experiencing hardship because of damage done by the recent hurricanes have resources to help them cope with the disaster.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, current students and federal student loan borrowers who have been impacted by a federally declared natural disaster should visit StudentAid.gov/naturaldisaster for guidance and support.

For students, there are options to transfer to another school or college, if needed, or for seeking more financial aid by having through financial aid eligibility reviewed through a process called “professional judgment.”

There are also options available for borrowers, such as a natural disaster forbearance, if they are having trouble making payments. The Department encourages impacted students to contact the financial aid office at their school and borrowers to contact their lender or loan servicer for assistance.
