Managing the “hecticness” of the holidays
The holidays can be a hectic and stressful time for many people.
How many times do we think that we must find the “perfect” gift for each person on our list, go all out with decorating and baking so that we create a magical experience, and say yes to every invitation extended to us?
According to an article by Psychology Today, the American Psychological Association found that 89% of adults feel overwhelmed during the holidays.
Some of the causes of feeling overwhelmed are juggling work with gift buying, decorating, baking, and attending holiday events. This can lead to financial pressures, lack of sleep, and simply overextending ourselves.
We shouldn’t go through the holidays wishing we could take a vacation to unwind once the holidays are over.
A few tips to make the holidays less hectic and stressful include:
- Create a budget for your holiday gift giving and stick to it. Going out to eat with friends in lieu of exchanging gifts might be one way to enjoy an evening and not break the bank buying gifts.
- Remember that it is okay to say “no” to some commitments during the holidays. You don’t have to attend every holiday event. It will allow you to be fully present at the ones you do attend.
- Prioritize self-care during the holidays. Don’t neglect healthy eating habits, sleep, and exercise. That’s not to say you can’t enjoy some special holiday treats. You’ll feel better if you don’t overeat, get regular exercise, and don’t short yourself on enough sleep.
- Let others help. If you have kids, have them help with the decorating and give them some grace if it isn’t perfect. Join a group of friends for a cookie exchange or support a local business and purchase some treats.
Remember, take time to relax and enjoy the holidays!
