Tip of the Week
What are your New Year’s intentions?
There’s something about getting out a new calendar that often prompts us to think about resolutions or intentions for the new year.
Many times, our resolutions or intentions are focused on our health, our financial habits, or our family and friends.
Have you set some intentions that will make for a better you as you work with students and families? You may want to consider these:
- Cultivate your ability for patience – Many times we are asked the same question multiple times a day. Respond to that student, parent, or colleague as if it is the first time you have been asked it today.
- Take a micro-break – Make sure to schedule a few minutes between appointments or meetings to make notes or to mentally refresh yourself. This will allow you to give your complete attention to the next student or family.
- Take a lunch break – Eating lunch at your desk only increases the risk of spills on your computer keyboard. Make sure you get away from your desk during lunch or for a break during the day. You can use that time to take a walk (and possibly achieve one of your resolutions) and it will also allow you to mentally recharge for the remainder of the day.
- Set boundaries – This time of the year can be hectic and the urge to stay late or go into the office on weekends may be tempting. Set a specific time you will leave. It will make for a more productive you.
- Learn something new outside of financial aid – Learning something new challenges us and keeps our mind sharp. It doesn’t mean you have to take a college course. You can learn basic photography, pickleball, or crocheting. You can even find apps or websites that will help you learn something new every day or month. Check out dictionary.com if you want to learn a new word and its definition every day.
Happy New Year!
