Tip of the Week

It’s a juggling act

Watching someone juggle is fascinating.

Recently, I attended an event where the presenter juggled during a portion of his presentation. I was in awe as to how he maintained his concentration in keeping the various objects in the air while talking.

Obviously, he had lots of practice.

As financial aid professionals, we may struggle with juggling a work-life balance, especially as we try to keep up with a daunting workload.

When I worked full-time, I struggled with finding an ideal work-life balance. I did a lot of reading on the topic and found some helpful tips that I’ll share:

  • Set boundaries for your work hours and leave at your designated time. This may mean setting an alarm on your phone as a reminder.
  • Take breaks (including lunch) to get away from your desk, allowing you to refocus and recharge.
  • Delegate tasks to other staff that will help lighten your workload.
  • Practice self-care by scheduling daily exercise. Start by taking a walk during a break.
  • Learn to say no in order to not over commit yourself.
  • Schedule vacation time and make yourself unplug and leave work behind.
  • Unplug from technology in the evening and on the weekends. The emails will be there when you return to work.

Finding that work-life balance is a juggling act and it takes practice.

Remember – keep practicing!
