Tip of the Week

No regrets

We probably all have a few regrets.

As we enter graduation season, students are embarking on their lives full of anticipation and joy and perhaps even a little trepidation. Trepidation over the possibility of making mistakes and regretting some action or decision.

But while this season is about the current graduates, it gives us all a chance to look back at the path our lives have taken since our own graduation. And rather than warning students about possible regrets, how about sharing those “never regrets?”

Maybe your list would include things like:

  • Spending time with family and friends
  • Caring for someone – an elderly relative, a child or a neighbor who needs your help
  • Talking with a stranger who seems to need a conversation
  • Traveling when you have the opportunity
  • Petting a friendly dog
  • Saying “thank you” or “I’m sorry” or “I love you”
  • Giving a compliment
  • Writing a note or email to someone just to let them know you are thinking of them
  • Listening to others and learning something new every day

No doubt, there will be mistakes and regrets. Even Frank Sinatra admits to a having a few regrets in the song, “My Way” – a song, which Sinatra reportedly hated because of its self-indulgent nature.

And I think Frank was right. Focusing on yourself is not the way to have only a few regrets in your life.

Instead, it’s when we focus on others that we have the least regret.
