Although students and parents won’t be able to apply for financial aid until December, you can get ready by setting up a StudentAid.gov account.

Setting up an account at StudentAid.gov, is also known as creating an FSA ID, which is the username and password for the account.

When setting up an account, here are a few tips to make the process successful:

  • Make sure your name and social security number match what you have on your Social Security card. The Department of Education will verify your information with the Social Security Administration.
  • A student and parent (or parents) cannot share an account and cannot use the same email address and/or phone number to create their accounts.
  • Don’t use a school or work email account. Make sure to use a personal email address that you will have access to in the future. Having access to the email account will be important if you ever need to reset your password in the future.

Be sure to keep your username and password secure to protect your personal information.
