Schools will have to wait a little longer for the NSLDS post-screening functionality.
The NSLDS post-screening functionality has been delayed from the end of 2024 to the spring of 2025, meaning that an updated ISIR will not be generated for applicants with new information. Two recent Electronic Announcements, dated January 10 and January 17, provided updates on the process.
The Department of Education plans to support schools during this ongoing administrative burden by providing an Excel file that identifies applicants for the 2024-25 award year whose eligibility status has changed since they originally submitted the FAFSA.
The January 17 announcement includes a chart outlining the Reason Code and Description of NSLDS Eligibility Conditions.
Schools will be able to filter the Excel file by Reason Code to identify students who need specific follow-up. It should be noted that Reason Code 01 (students who entered default on a Title IV loan that was previously not in default) has been excluded at this time in order for the Department to review the default status of borrowers who participated in Fresh Start. Reason Code 01 should be included in the files sent by February 28.
Schools will be able to download the NSLDS Post-screening Eligibility Changes file on the Common Origination & Disbursement (COD) website by January 31, with updates monthly. Schools should then review the list, filter the information relevant to their school, and take appropriate action.
Schools can access the NSLDS Post-screening Eligibility Changes file on COD by:
- Selecting the School tab,
- Navigating to the School Information section,
- Going to the File Share/Messages section,
- Downloading the NSLDS Post-screening Eligibility changes file for your OPEID.
NSLDS Post-screening Eligibility Change files will be available for 180 days on COD.
Schools should note that once the FAFSA Processing System (FPS) can generate ISIRS for applicants with updated NSLDS information, schools will receive an updated ISIR.
