Financial aid and college access professionals now have a tool available to familiarize themselves with the 2027-28 FAFSA.
The Department of Education announced the availability of the 2027-28 FAFSA prototype, which is an interactive tool that allows users to see and interact with most of the pages of the online 2027-28 FAFSA form.
To access the 2027–28 FAFSA prototype, visit fsapartners.ed.gov/fafsa-prototype/2728 and enter the access code: prototype2728. Once “View FAFSA Preview” is selected, a user can select any of the available scenarios for a student, parent, or spouse contributor from the prototype landing page.
According to the Department, the FAFSA prototype is not a complete replica of the 2027–28 FAFSA form that will be available at StudentAid.gov. Instead, it’s a web-based design tool that allows users to navigate specific scenarios that many 2027–28 applicants will encounter on the live website.
The FAFSA prototype includes demonstrations on how to:
- start, sign, and submit a new FAFSA form as a student or parent;
- complete, sign, and submit an in-progress application as a student, parent, or spouse; and
- correct a submitted application for common issues, like adding a missing signature.
The announcement includes the 2027-28 FAFSA Prototype Tip Sheet that has basic instructions for finding specific scenarios. Also, the 2027–28 FAFSA Preview Presentation provides step-by-step directions for common user scenarios.
