A higher education battle

It seemed like all hope was lost.

The American army had marched for days in freezing cold – some soldiers without shoes, leaving a trail of blood where they stepped. Many were sick and had not eaten for days.

How could an army that was so bedraggled be rallied to fight for the cause of freedom?

And yet, General George Washington did just that. He and his troops persevered when it seemed like they could fight no longer. Washington rallied his troops, leading them across the Delaware Rivers, to crucial victories at the battles of Trenton and Princeton.

As we begin a new academic year, higher education (and more specifically, financial aid) is fighting battles on several fronts.

These are revolutionary times in higher education. It may not be the same as our ancestors faced in the Revolutionary War—but in some ways, they paved the way for us—if nothing else, as inspiration and a reminder that there is strength in resolve.

As you begin this 2026-27 academic year, may you persevere.

And never, never lose hope.
